The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) offers a fascinating, bright, precise, refined and elegant bouquet of ripe peaches and mangos intertwined with very fine flinty aromas that represent great depth and complexity yet in an excitingly subtle, delicate and delicious way. Sweet, piquant and elegant on the palate, this is a pristine, highly finessed and salty, concentrated yet lush and highly refined WSU with palate-tickling grip and crystalline acidity. The finish is stimulatingly salty and intense and made for long bottle aging, even though the 2018 is already dangerously great and seductive. Compared to the Zeltinger sister Auslese, the Wehlener is the finer and more delicate wine this year. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.
