Saint-Julien is located on the left of Bordeaux, sandwiched between the Pauillac and Margaux, and is one of the six famous sub-regions of Medoc. Although it is the smallest region with only 910 hectares, its vineyard area ranks the top in the Bordeaux region, producing an average of 450,000 cases of wine per year.
The overall terroir of Saint-Julien is the same, only the distance from the Gironde delta causes a slight climatic difference. The soil contains gravel, sand, limestone, and clay, as well as rock masses of all shapes and sizes. More specifically, the soils in the north and east of the village have a higher proportion of gravel, while the west and south have more sandy soils and smaller grains of gravel, which makes Saint-Julien's wines very distinctive.
The main grape varieties planted in Saint-Julien are Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and the only Carménère grape remains in the production area. The wines of Saint-Julien have aromas of black currant, cocoa beans, and cedar. Brightly coloured and juicy, it's a true brew that immerses food lovers in a swirl of fragrant aromas and extremely delicate palate.
There are also 11 classified growths classified in 1855 in the Saint-Julien area. Among them, there are 5 Deuxiemes Crus, the more familiar ones are Chateau Leoville Las Cases, Chateau Leoville-Barton, Chateau Leoville Poyferre and so on. Troisiemes Crus has 2 and Quatriemes Crus has 4.
