Saint Estephe is the northernmost of the 4 famous sub-regions of Haut-Medoc. With a total area of 1,200 hectares. It ranks second among the 4 well-known sub-regions of Haut-Medoc, after Margaux, Since the wine industry develops later than the other 3 sub-regions, in the winery rating in 1855, only 5 wineries in this producing area were shortlisted. The main grape varieties in the region are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In the past 30 years, the proportion of Merlot has increased significantly, making the wines of the region more and more acceptable.
The soil structure of Saint Estephe is complex and varied, apart from sporadic gravel, mostly clay, with some calcareous soil mixed in the northwest. The poor drainage of the clay, coupled with the region's northerly location and cooler climate, results in slower ripening of the grapes.
The red wines produced by Saint Estephe have high acidity and are the most tannin and full-bodied wines in the entire Bordeaux appellation. The red wines of the producing area are sour and hard, with a rough style, strong astringent tannins, and even earthy flavors. After several years of aging, the aroma and taste will become soft and layered. The wines of this region are special in that they are extremely deep in colour, deep and rich in texture, with mineral flavours, yet lively.
Saint Estephe does not have a grand cru, and there are only five classified wineries, which are only half of Saint-Julien and one-third of Pauillac, and the scale of each winery is not large. However, even though the number of Saint Estephe estates is not comparable to other producing areas, the quality of its wines is quite outstanding. Wines from at least two of the five Grand Crus are of the highest quality. The Saint-Estèphe appellation is led by two deuxieme crus, Ch. Montrose, and Ch. Cos d’Estournel.
