Puligny-Montrachet is in the very heart of the Côte de Beaune. Puligny-Montrachet was originally known only as Puligny. The origin of these names is that mont means mountain, and rache is not too flashy compared to "scab" and "rash".

There are 230-320 meters above sea level. Vines typically grow on brown limestone soils, or soils where limestone alternates with marl and calcareous clay. The soil is deep in some places. In other cases, rocks are exposed at the surface. On higher and rougher slopes if there is clay-based alluvial soil. Facing east and southeast. The climate type is continental, with hot and dry summers and cold and long winters. Spring arrives earlier here than in some northern regions such as Chablis. The combination of soil and climate here provides an excellent terroir for the growth of Chardonnay here.

Almost all the grapes grown are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and the white wines are mostly bright gold with green highlights that become more intense with age. The bouquet incorporates hawthorn flowers, ripe grapes, marzipan, hazelnuts, amber, lemongrass, and green apple. Creamy (butter, hot croissant) and mineral aromas (flint) are as common as honey. The body and aromas blend harmoniously and delicately. This wine combines elegance, distinctive character, and extraordinary concentration. Red wines have bright rubies when young, darkening with age. Its bouquet is divided into small red fruits (raspberry gooseberry) and black fruit (blackcurrant blackberry), later transferred to leather, musk, and fur. Gentle and firm, it binds well and does well after a few years of ageing.

There are 4 Grand Crus in Puligny-Montrachet, Montrachet Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and Chevalier-Montrachet. Premier Cru has 17. Familiar wineries are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Etienne Sauzet, Domaine Ramonet, etc.
