Pessac-Leognan is located at the southern end of Bordeaux and north of Graves, near the left bank of Garonne. It is a legal sub-region of Bordeaux and should be regarded as the youngest one. It has only been 30 years since it became an independent production area in 1987, but this youngest production area is enough to disdain the crowd. Pessac Leognan originally belonged to the two wine villages of Pessac and Leognan under the Graves appellation. As early as 2,000 years ago, the Romans had grown wine grapes in the present-day Pessac Leognan and Graves regions, and since 1152 AD, the wine was exported to Britain and other continental kingdoms. The main red grape variety in the region is Cabernet Sauvignon, in addition to Merlot, Cabernet Franc and small amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec.

As a former part of Graves, Pessac Leognan and Graves have a very similar soil quality, the soil is roughly a mixture of clay and gravel; coupled with the flat terrain, the soil has better drainage, and the relatively warm climate is also suitable for planting Cabernet Sauvignon.

Pessac Leognan produces red wines in a variety of styles, from simple red wines for young people to full-bodied and elegant red wines with smoky and flue-cured tobacco aromas, blackcurrant, black cherry, leather, tar and truffle flavours, tannins are silky and velvety. The wines of Pessac Leognan have great potential to age for decades, and if the conditions are right and preserved properly, they can even be aged for more than 100 years. Pessac Leognan's white wine is full-bodied, fresh, and lively, often showing obvious taste characteristics such as citrus, lemon, grapefruit, lime, green apple, orange blossom, honey and mineral. Most Pessac Leognan liquors are suitable for drinking when young. However, top liquors like Chateau Haut Brion and Domaine de Chevalier can be aged for 50 years or more.

Pessac Leognan did not establish a new grading system after independence but continued the Graves grading system in 1959. The 16 wineries in this classification are all excellent wineries that are very competitive in the world today. The most famous winery of Pessac Leognan is Chateau Haut Biron, which was the only one of the four first-growth estates not in Medoc when the Bordeaux Grand Crus were classified in 1855, and Chateau Haut Biron is in the Pessac region.
