Haut Medoc is in the south-central part of Medoc, upstream of Gironde, spanning about 60 kilometers from north to south, covering an area of 4,198 hectares for grape cultivation. This region has a long history. In the 17th century, it was vigorously developed by the Dutch to form the original form of Haut Medoc. In 1815, a wine broker from Chartrons strongly recommended the wines produced by Haut Medoc, and the reputation of the region began to spread from this period. In 1936, it was recognized by INAO as an AOC Appellation.
Haut Medoc has a diverse terroir with deep Garonne sedimentary gravels in the topsoil and grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot. The variety of high-quality terroirs determines the variety of Haut Medoc wines. The soil is mostly gravel soil, which is relatively poor, with good drainage and less water content, which is more suitable for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wines from this region are of good quality, lively in style, full-bodied, high in alcohol and moderate in acidity, but not overpowering, harmoniously balanced and more complex when aged.
There are about 400 producers in Haut Medoc, of which about 250 are independent wineries and the rest are members of cooperatives. Only red wine can be labeled with Haut Medoc, white wine is classified as Bordeaux Blanc, and the sub-region of Haut Medoc is Pauillac, Margaux, Saint Juluen, Saint Estephe, Listrac-Medoc, Moulis-en-Medoc
