Gevrey-Chambertin is in the south of Dijon, with Fixin to the north and Morey-Saint-Denis to the south. It is a very famous wine-producing village in Burgundy. Gevrey-Chambertin has a very long history of viticulture, with clear records of viticulture as early as the 6th century AD. At the time it was just called Gevrey. In 1847, the mayor, Louis Phillippe, put the name Chambertin to the village's most famous vineyard, and changed the name of the village to Chambertin.
The Premier Crus occupy the upper half of the Côte d’Or, with a height of between 280 and 380 meters (brown limestone soils, rather shallow). And below are Village vines on brown calcareous soils. The vines also reap the benefits of the marl covered slabs and red silt washed down from the plateau. These stony mixtures impart elegance and sophistication to the wine, while the clay-like marl, rich in fossilized shellfish deposits and adds solidity.
When young, Gevrey-Chambertin's wines are bright ruby in color, turning to a deep carmine or dark waxy red with age. Strawberry, mulberry, violet and rose are its spontaneous aromas. When the wine is more mature, it brings out liquorice, leather and fur, with a hint of game and a hint of bush. On the palate it is firm, with soft and fine tannins. These wines are Burgundy's finest: full-bodied, powerful, rich. They have both body and soul. They are very age-able wines and are usually made with the goal of ageing when young and mainly enjoying pleasant fruity aromas.
Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest village on the Cote de Nuits, with a total area of more than 500 hectares. It also owns 9 Grand Crus super fields with a total of 87.28 hectares, which is the largest in Burgundy. Also, the most famous garden, Gevrey-Chambertin, is known as the "King of Burgundy" . 26 Premier Crus first-class fields of 80.52 hectares. Some Premier Cru are extremely high quality, such as Clos Saint-Jacques, which surpasses many Grand Crus. Only five elite wineries own this prestigious Premier Cru: Armand Rousseau, Fourrier, Bruno Clair and Louis Jadot.
