Beaune is in eastern France. The second largest city in the Cote de Or and the center of the Burgundy wine trade. It has been associated with Burgundy wines even before the formation of the French Appellation System.
The limestone-rich soils and direct sunlight of the Beaune region have created a superb "terroir" whose intricacies have been carefully studied and refined over generations. It stretches for more than 20 kms and has a vineyard area of 5,980 hectares with gentle slopes. The subsoil is marl-limestone in the Middle Jurassic period, the topsoil is calcareous clay, and the soil between the subsoil and the topsoil is rich in iron ore. Compared to the Cote de Nuits, its climate is milder.
Beaune products fresh and sweet red wine and less for white wine, mostly active flower-flavoured type, but white wine quality is also high. Red Wine is better than Cote de Nuits with higher tannins, ruby red color, aromas of red fruits, animal, humus and undergrowth. Round mouthfeel, moderate acidity and ageing potential.
Although there is no Grand Cru, up to three-quarters of vineyards receive Premier Cru, with the best: Les Avaux and Les Bouch Erottes Les Bressandes, LesCents Vignes ClosduRoi. Major producers in Beaune include: Albert Bichot, Bourchard P.&F., Chanson P.&F., Joseph Drouhin, Louis Jadot, Louis Latours, etc.
